An der Westküste Siziliens bauen die Produzent*innen Francesco Grisafi die «Navelina» Orangen, Anna Gabriella Barbera die Grapefruits «Star Ruby» und Giovanni Argiroffi die «Interdonato» Zitronen pestizidfrei und in einer kleinräumigen, vielseitigen Landwirtschaft für dich an. Die völlig unbehandelten Zitrusfrüchte werden erst kurz vor der Auslieferung geerntet, damit du sie zu Hause frisch geniessen kannst.

Taste and use

This is what makes Sicilian citrus fruits so special:

  • Taste: The "Navelina" is a fine edible orange with a beautiful balance of sweetness and acidity. The grapefruits of the "Star Ruby" variety have red flesh and a strong sweet and sour flavor. The lemons of the "Interdonato" variety have an intense flavor and are therefore ideal for refining dishes, making a fine vinaigrette or a delicious lemonade.
  • Quality features: The producers only harvest the fruit that is perfectly ripe. Because they work consistently without pesticides, you can eat the whole fruit including the skin or use it in recipes.
  • Use: You can store citrus fruit in the fridge or cellar for up to several weeks. Slightly damaged fruit should be eaten first.

Cultivation and ecology

This is how these Sicilian citrus fruits are grown:

  • Cultivation method: Organic farming. In addition to various citrus fruits, the farms in western Sicily also grow olives, artichokes, almonds and much more.
  • Producers: The producers of these citrus fruits are all members of Valdibella, our trusted partner cooperative in Sicily. The organic oranges are grown by Francesco Grisafi on his small farm. In addition to his agricultural work, he is also a teacher. The grapefruit comes from Anna Gabriella Barbera's versatile organic farm, which she runs together with her husband Filippo. Anna is originally from Verona and married a Sicilian man whose family has a long tradition of organic farming. Her father-in-law planted the first avocados in Sicily back in 1978 together with the University of Palermo. Now Anna is carrying on the family tradition with great passion. Organic producer Giovanni Argiroffi grows his lemons very close to the sea near Menfi. The sandy soil and proximity to the sea give the organic lemons their special aroma.
