For our espresso, we have blended 60% "Arabica" beans from the Amazon with 40% "Robusta" beans from Kerala. The result is an intense coffee with a hint of Italianità. Both in Peru and in southern India, the coffee plants are cultivated by our partners in biodiverse forest gardens in a soil- and climate-friendly manner and are harvested by hand.

Taste and use

That's what makes this coffee from Peru and Kerala so special:

  • Taste: While the "Arabica" beans from Peru bring fruity notes and sweetness to the coffee, the "Robusta" from Kerala provides a beautiful crema, intensity and body. We roast this blend slightly darker than the AMAZONAS coffee: for all lovers of strong coffee with a touch of Italianità.
  • Quality features: Our Swiss roasting partners "Kaffeemacher" have created a perfect blend from coffee beans from Peru and Kerala. The beans are blended in a 40:60 ratio and roasted together. This coffee is very close to our hearts because it combines the skills of our partners in Asia and South America with Swiss roasting craftsmanship. The result is a beautiful espresso that will also delight our friends in Sicily.
  • Use: This intense blend of Peruvian "Arabica" and "Robusta" from Kerala is perfect for preparing a classic espresso. Here you can find our blog entry on coffee preparation.

Cultivation and ecology

This is how coffee is grown:

  • Cultivation method: Cultivation in agroforestry systems without artificial fertilizers and synthetic pesticides. These are so-called agroforestry gardens, which are particularly climate-friendly, as you can see in this article you can read up on.
The "Arabica" coffee from our partner cooperative CAFHU grows at 1500-1900 meters above sea level in the Peruvian mountain rainforest under large, shady trees. The coffee cherries in Peru are processed using the honey process and harvested by hand.
The "Robusta" beans grow at 800-1000 meters in the Wayanad district in the north of Kerala (South India). The farmers of the "Fair Trade Alliance Kerala" grow coffee bushes there alongside coconut palms, pepper vines, cinnamon trees and cardamom bushes. The FTAK coffee cherries are processed in a wet process ("washed process"). They are also harvested by hand.
  • Producers: The "Cooperativa Agraria y Forestal del Valle de Huayabama" (CAFHU for short) was founded by 20 small Peruvian producers. They are highly motivated, mostly young coffee farmers who want to create a livelihood for themselves in the remote Alto Huayabamba Valley by producing high-quality coffee. They thus form a counterpoint to the widespread trend of migrating to the city. We are convinced that their way of growing coffee in the beautiful forest gardens is forward-looking.
The small farms of the members of the "Fair Trade Alliance Kerala" are on average just one hectare in size. The farmers grow a wide variety of products for export, for the local village markets, but also for themselves. Many have an additional income because family members work in the city or even abroad and support the farming families.

This is how the price is made up

Producers in Peru receive USD 12 per kilogram of coffee ex port. Producers in Kerala receive USD 5 per kilogram of coffee ex port. This currently corresponds to around 2.5 times the world market price for "Arabica" and around 2 times the price for "Robusta" beans (source: icocoffee.org). Approx. 17% of the weight is lost during roasting.
