Taste and use

This is what makes Sicilian "Tarocco Meli" blood oranges so special:

  • Taste: The late-ripening orange variety "Tarocco Meli" with a particularly high vitamin C content is an intensely tasty, sweet and sour blood orange.
  • Quality features: Completely untreated organic blood oranges, harvested and sorted by hand, fresh from the harvest and direct to you without any intermediaries.
  • Use: Peel, bite into and enjoy. The fruit is just as good for juice. Stored in a cool place, the oranges will keep for approx. 10 days, e.g. with a blanket to protect them from frost on the balcony, in the fridge or cellar.

Cultivation and ecology

This is how the Sicilian "Tarocco Meli" blood oranges are grown:

  • Cultivation method: Organic farming. Table grapes grow on around 6 hectares of hilly land near Mazzarrone, surrounded by a centuries-old olive grove. In order to diversify her cultivation, producer Elena Cassisi has planted peach and orange trees, which are now bearing their first fruit. The area is ideal for growing blood oranges, which require a sufficient temperature difference between warm days and cold nights for their typical coloring.
  • Producers: "I firmly believe that together we can create biodiversity and a fair food market," says producer Elena Cassisi from Sicily. Just a few years ago, Elena and her family took over an abandoned farm in south-eastern Sicily and converted it to organic farming. The crops had been neglected for years and Elena first had to take care of them again - this included cutting back the perennials and adding compost to the soil. Since then, Elena has been acquiring new knowledge year after year and diversifying her cultivation. She has already noticed an increase in biodiversity and an improvement in the soil structure.
Elena is keen to raise awareness of the environment, healthy eating and organic farming among people and other producers in the region and thus expand the network of the Valdibella cooperative, of which she is a member. Valdibella uses the "Addio Pizzo" label to declare that no protection money is paid to criminal organizations.
