Taste and use

This is what makes this cardamom from Kerala so special:

  • Taste: Cardamom has a sweet, slightly spicy aroma with floral and fruity, citrusy notes.
  • Quality features: Cardamom grown pesticide-free is a rarity, as the plant is susceptible to disease.
  • Use: The queen of spices is mainly used in coffee and various sweet dishes in Arab countries. In India, cardamom is an important ingredient in various curries and for the "Masala Chai". It is also particularly delicious in homemade rice pudding.

Cultivation and ecology

This is how cardamom is grown:

  • Cultivation method: Cultivation in multi-stage agroforestry systems, without the use of pesticides. The producers of the "Fair Trade Alliance Kerala" grow this unique spice in beautiful forest gardens under tall trees. Conventionally, cardamom is grown on a large scale in India for the food industry and the markets in the Middle East, with a high level of pesticide use. One of the difficulties faced by our partner cooperative is the persistent drought in recent years and various diseases. Cardamom is a sensitive, susceptible plant and yields can be correspondingly low. The price we pay our partners also takes into account the production risks for this spice, which is full of character.
  • Producers: The small farms of the members of the "Fair Trade Alliance Kerala" are on average just one hectare in size. The farmers grow a wide variety of products for export, for the local village markets, but also for themselves. Many have an additional income because family members work in the city or even abroad and support the farming families.

This is how the price is made up

The producers receive USD 42 per kilogram of cardamom. We pay USD 100 per kilogram of cardamom.
