Taste and use
That's what makes this ginger powder from Kerala so special:
- Taste: The spicy taste of ginger is retained even in powder form thanks to the careful processing.
- Quality features: The powder is made from fresh ginger root. As fresh ginger is usually transported to us by plane or refrigerated container, ginger powder is a significantly more ecological alternative to the fresh product.
- Use: The ginger powder is ideal for use in Indian cuisine, but also goes well with dishes with carrots, as an ingredient in sweet pastries or in a fine "masala chai". Here for example, you can find a recipe with ginger powder.
Cultivation and ecology
This is how the ginger powder is grown:
- Cultivation method: Cultivation in multi-stage agroforestry systems, without the use of pesticides. Like turmeric, ginger belongs to the lily family. The spice is extracted from the root: After harvesting, the roots are washed and scrubbed. The ginger is then cut into fine slices and dried in the sun. The dry pieces of ginger are then ground into powder.
- Producers: The small farms of the members of the "Fair Trade Alliance Kerala" are on average just one hectare in size. The farmers grow a wide variety of products for export, for the local village markets, but also for themselves. Many have an additional income because family members work in the city or even abroad and support the farming families.
This is how the price is made up
The producers receive USD 0.75 per kilogram of fresh ginger. We pay USD 40 per kilogram of ground ginger.
