Taste and use
That's what makes this coconut oil from Kerala so special:
- Taste: This native oil has the characteristic taste of coconut and brings a fresh tropical flair to your dishes.
- Quality features: This is natural coconut oil. Careful attention is always paid to hygienic conditions during production so that, unlike industrially produced coconut oil, there is no need for chemical post-treatment. In this way, the oil retains its unique taste and numerous nutrients. What is the difference between coconut oil and coconut fat? It's simple: in tropical Kerala, the product is mostly liquid and is therefore called oil, whereas here it solidifies into fat due to the moderate temperatures. Here you can find our blog entry on coconut oil.
- Use: In Kerala, fresh coconut oil has always been used generously in cooking and also for skin and hair care. If the spices are fried in coconut oil before cooking, their aromas in the curry unfold in a special way. However, coconut oil is not only suitable for traditional Indian recipes, but also for sautéing seasonal vegetables or fish or for baking a cake.
Cultivation and ecology
This is how coconut oil is grown:
- Cultivation method: Cultivation in multi-stage agroforestry systems, without the use of pesticides. The ripe coconuts are harvested from the tall palm trees that characterize the landscape in Kerala. The farmers use a climbing aid to climb up the smooth trunk. After this challenging undertaking, the nuts are freed from the fibrous outer shell and delivered to the factory, where the virgin coconut oil is extracted from the fresh coconuts by cold pressing.
- Producers: The small farms of the members of the "Fair Trade Alliance Kerala" are on average just one hectare in size. The farmers grow a wide variety of products for export, for the local village markets, but also for themselves. Many have an additional income because family members work in the city or even abroad and support the farming families.
This is how the price is made up

the word unobtrusive comes to mind with this coconut oil. it is light, very digestible and does not dominate the taste.
I use it to make curry roasted kerala cashew nuts, among other things. divine.

I can't compare it to other coconut oils, but I find it wonderfully light and subtle for curries and fish
