The Malabar Coast in northern Kerala is not called the Pepper Coast for nothing: On the one hand, this is the origin of pepper and on the other, the grains from this region are considered to be particularly aromatic. The pepper plants grow in ecological agroforestry systems between coconut palms, coffee bushes and many other cultivated plants.

Taste and use

That's what makes this pepper from Kerala so special:

  • Taste: The grains from this region are considered to be particularly aromatic.
  • Quality features: After many centuries of trade, pepper from the Malabar Coast is still considered to be one of the best around. It is not a single variety, but a mixture of different varieties that make up its unique taste. Black pepper is harvested green, i.e. before it is fully ripe and its fruits turn red. The pepper is then dried in the sun outside the houses. This creates the black skin that gives black pepper its name.
  • Use: The aromatic pepper from northern Kerala is equally suitable for everyday dishes, Indian recipes and experimental dishes such as spicy desserts. You can find recipes on our Blog.

Cultivation and ecology

This is how the pepper is grown:

  • Cultivation method: Cultivation in multi-stage agroforestry systems, without the use of pesticides. The farmers of the "Fair Trade Alliance Kerala" know exactly whether they are growing "Valamkottai", "Karimunda", "Jeerakamundi" or "Panniyoor" pepper. The producers meet at the annual Seed Festival and proudly present the seeds they have brought along to exchange.
  • Producers: The small farms of the members of the "Fair Trade Alliance Kerala" are on average just one hectare in size. The farmers grow a wide variety of products for export, for the local village markets, but also for themselves. Many have an additional income because family members work in the city or even abroad and support the farming families.

This is how the price is made up

The producers receive USD 9.35 per kilogram of pepper. We pay USD 25 per kilogram of pepper.
