The taste of our juicy medlars will transport you to Andalusian spring. They offer an exciting change to your fruit plate, especially at a time when the local fruit palette does not yet have much to offer. Our medlars come from Carlos and Mónica Márquez Baeza, who grow them organically with passion and dedication on their small farm in southern Spain. Using regenerative farming methods, soil fertility is continuously improved, which not only benefits the environment but also contributes to an exceptional taste experience.

Taste and use

That's what makes these Spanish medlars so special:

  • Taste: Die saftigen Mispelfrüchte überzeugen mit einem angenehm süss-sauren Geschmack und sind kalorienarm. Sie sind reich an Mineralien, Vitaminen und Folsäure. Dank ihres hohen Faser- und Tanningehalts wirken Mispeln verdauungsfördernd und entzündungshemmend.
  • Quality features: Completely untreated medlar fruit.
  • Use: The orange-colored medlars are best enjoyed fresh or processed into compote and jam. They have reached optimum ripeness when they are slightly soft but still have a good firmness. The fruits are sensitive to low temperatures and are therefore not suitable for storage in the fridge. They should be consumed or processed within a few days.

Cultivation and ecology

This is how these Spanish medlars are grown:

  • Cultivation method: Organic farming. Methods of regenerative agriculture to improve soil fertility. Carlos and Mónica have made a name for themselves for their high-quality avocados. In addition, mangoes, medlars and citrus fruits are also grown on the small farm with its subtropical climate. Although the medlar tree normally reaches a height of 5 to 8 meters, it is kept lower to make harvesting easier.
  • Producers: Carlos and Mónica Márquez Baeza are small-scale producers near Málaga and members of the Tierra y Libertad cooperative. Together with their family, they grow various fruits on 5 hectares of land. Tierra y Libertad was recommended to us by our partner cooperative in Sicily and we noticed that the chemistry was right from the very first Skype call. All the producers grow mainly for the local market and see exports as a supplement that enables them to invest even more in the ecology of their farms through additional income.
