The Orange Wine "Sulle Bucce" is produced by our partner cooperative Valdibella from the Sicilian grape variety "Grillo". As an uncompromising natural wine, it is fermented spontaneously with naturally occurring yeast fungi from the vineyard and pressed entirely without sulphur. In contrast to conventional wines no chemicals are used in the production process. The result is an original wine with beautiful citrus notes and a slightly tart finish, which can also be enjoyed with stronger dishes.

Taste and use

This is what makes the Sicilian natural orange wine "Sulle Bucce" so special:

  • Taste: The "Sulle Bucce" is more complex in aroma and fuller-bodied than the "Isolano" white wine.
  • Quality features: Spontaneous fermentation. Alcohol content: 13%. The natural wine "Sulle Bucce" is vegan. Spontaneously fermented and made entirely without sulphites, it is an uncompromising natural wine. Because it has been fermented on the skins for quite a long time, you can feel fine tannins on the finish. The "Grillo" grapes are harvested by hand at the beginning of September. After pressing, the wine is fermented with yeasts naturally occurring in the vineyard and cellar and left on the skins for 10 to 15 days. This so-called "mash fermentation" is the main difference in the production of orange wine and white wine. In contrast to conventional wines, no chemicals are used for the "Sulle Bucce". The sulphite permitted in organic wines is also completely omitted.
  • Use: The "Sulle Bucce" is also a good accompaniment to stronger dishes.

Cultivation and ecology

This is how the grapes for the Orange Wine "Sulle Bucce" are grown:

  • Cultivation method: Organic farming. Without irrigation. The "Grillo" grape is a Sicilian cultivar of "Catarratto" and "Zibbibo" from the 19th century. The sprays permitted in organic cultivation are used only minimally. Here you can find our Blog post to the natural wine from Valdibella.
  • Producers: Giuseppe Montalbano is a member of the Valdibella cooperative. Valdibella uses the "Addio Pizzo" label to declare that it does not pay protection money to criminal organizations.

This is how the price is made up

Giuseppe Montalbano receives EUR 0.56 per kilo for his grapes. This is 2.8 times more than the price for conventional grapes on the local market (source: Valdibella 2016).

  1. lailagrillo -

We tasted the 2023 wine on August 20. For us, it has notes of fermented apple, pears, herbs and slightly vegetative notes on the nose. Tart on the finish. But also some almonds and marzipan on the nose. A long-lasting finish and a few pine notes round off the wine. Very natural and aromatic, but difficult for us to pair with food. A wine whose taste needs to be discovered. Unfortunately, we did not smell or taste the citrus notes, but the fine tart finish is there.

  2. Gaby -

    I like it very much

  3. Anigna Waldegg -

White wine that leaves a tingling sensation in the mouth. As yellow as a late morning. I like its tart sweetness and the fresh note at the end.
