Taste and use
This is what makes Spanish citrus fruits so special:
- Taste: The grapefruits of the "Star Ruby" variety are red-fleshed and strongly sweet and tart. The late-ripening "Navelate" orange has a nice balance of sweetness and acidity. Kumquats have a sweet and sour flesh and an edible peel with exotic citrus aromas.
- Quality features: These completely untreated organic citrus fruits come fresh from the harvest and directly into your hands without any intermediaries.
- Use: Oranges and grapefruits are best stored in a cool and not too dry place (e.g. in the cellar). Kumquats will keep for several days in the fridge. Kumquats can be enjoyed raw as a source of vitamins or with sweet desserts (e.g. chocolate mousse). Preserved, they make an exotic jam.
Cultivation and ecology
This is how Spanish citrus fruits are grown:
- Cultivation method: Organic farming. In the subtropical climate of Málaga, the small farms of the Tierra y Libertad farmers grow citrus fruits as well as avocados, mangoes and much more. They are committed to the preservation of old orange varieties and climate-friendly production. Special attention is also paid to soil fertility.
- Producers: These citrus fruits grow in the fertile Valle Guadalhorce, where fruit is otherwise grown on a large scale using conventional methods. The oranges come from Paco Bedoya's family farm. During heavy rainfall, when the nearby river overflows its banks, the water also reaches the cultivation areas and leaves behind a layer of sediment with lots of organic matter, which is very useful for the trees. The kumquats grow on Enrique Villeno's family farm. He runs a diverse farm with different citrus fruits and very old kumquat trees, which he has been cultivating organically for many years. The grapefruits are grown by Paco Moreno. He grows a variety of citrus fruits on his small farm. He is a source of inspiration for neighboring producers in the region and supports them in the use of agroecological cultivation practices.
