Taste and use
That's what makes these Andalusian grapes so special:
- Taste: These large berries are very sweet with juicy flesh, as they contain more water than conventional raisins. The skin is rather firm to the bite and they contain small crunchy seeds.
- Quality features: The old grape variety "Moscatel de Málaga" is considered to be one of the oldest, genetically unaltered grape varieties. There are many different muscatel grapes, but only the "Moscatel de Málaga" is also used for dried fruit. The berry style is not removed so that the outer skin of the fruit remains intact and no preservation aids are necessary. The grapes are harvested by hand and dried in the sun according to ancient tradition.
- Use: These sun-dried grapes are suitable as a snack on the go or as an ingredient in your muesli, for example.
Cultivation and ecology
This is how the grapes are grown:
- Cultivation method: Organic farming. The steep, slate-covered slopes in the Axarquía region, with their dry climate and hot summers, offer unique conditions for the cultivation of muscatel grapes and subsequent sun-drying. The family business Huerta La Perucha uses a number of traditional agricultural practices for this. Among other things, they create hollows around the vines so that water collects during the rainy season and soil erosion is reduced. When the rainy season is over, the individual vines are covered to protect them from the harsh summer weather.
- Producers: Huerta La Perucha is the family project of María and Carlo. In addition to the muscatel grapes from Málaga, which are protected by the FAO, they grow subtropical fruits and some other crops for self-sufficiency. They work intensively with permaculture methods and are committed to preventing soil erosion and desertification in the region. They are members of Tierra y Libertad, our partner cooperative in Andalusia.
