Taste and use
That's what makes this coffee from Peru so special:
- Taste: This pure "Arabica" has a beautifully balanced taste. It is not roasted too dark so that the characteristic aromas of its origin are retained.
- Quality features: For this product, only fully ripe coffee cherries are harvested by hand in the Peruvian mountain rainforest. After harvesting, the coffee is very carefully processed using the honey process. Coffee cultivation has a long tradition in Rodriguez de Mendoza and these producers are masters of their trade. Every year they achieve such a high quality that their beans qualify as specialty coffee. Once in Switzerland, the coffee is roasted with great care by our partner "Kaffeemacher". Philipp and Benjamin specialize in getting the best out of high-quality beans and bringing out the characteristic aromas of each origin. In this way, the hard work of the producers can be truly appreciated with every cup of coffee.
- Use: This roast is very versatile. For example, as a pleasantly fruity espresso or as a café crème for breakfast. You can find recipes for every type of preparation in this Blog article.
Cultivation and ecology
This is how coffee is grown:
- Cultivation method: Cultivation in an agroforestry system without artificial fertilizers and synthetic pesticides. The coffee bushes grow at 1500-1900 meters above sea level in the Peruvian mountain rainforest under large, shady trees. These are so-called agroforestry gardens, which are particularly climate-friendly: Thanks to the preservation of natural cycles, the soil is protected from erosion, the leaching of nutrients is prevented and the resilience of the ecosystem is maintained. This means that artificial fertilizers and pesticides can be dispensed with. In a Study we were able to show that this coffee has three times less impact on the environment than conventionally grown coffee. Incidentally, the coffee cherries are processed using the honey process, which uses much less water than the washed process.
- Producers: The "Cooperativa Agraria y Forestal del Valle de Huayabama" (CAFHU for short) was founded by 20 small Peruvian producers. They are highly motivated, mostly young coffee farmers who want to create a livelihood for themselves in the remote Alto Huayabamba Valley by producing high-quality coffee. They thus form a counterpoint to the widespread trend of migrating to the city. We are convinced that their way of growing coffee in the beautiful forest gardens is forward-looking.
This is how the price is made up
Producers receive USD 12 per kilogram of coffee from the port of Peru. This corresponds to around 2.5 times the world market price (source: icocoffee.org). Around 17% of the weight is lost during roasting.

A great coffee taste experience! Organically grown and fairly traded products are very important to me. I have finally found a supplier that clearly declares the origin of its coffee. The wait was worth it. I was also always kept up to date by the Crowd Container team regarding the delivery date.
