"Karimunda", one of the most aromatic old pepper varieties, is now an endangered rarity. It has a sweet scent of tropical fruits and a fiery, hot finish. With this single variety pepper, we celebrate the diversity in the forest gardens of Kerala and at the same time contribute to its preservation.

Taste and use

That's what makes this pepper from Kerala so special:

  • Taste: "Karimunda pepper has a sweet scent of tropical fruits such as ripe mangoes, but has a fiery, hot finish. Compare your "Karimunda" pepper with our Malabar pepper blend made from different varieties - the difference is fascinating!
  • Quality features: After many centuries of trade, pepper from the Malabar Coast is still considered to be one of the best around. The "Karimunda" variety is particularly prized for its aroma and taste. Black "Karimunda" pepper is harvested green, i.e. before it is fully ripe and its fruits turn red. The pepper is then dried in the sun in front of the houses. This creates the black skin that gives black pepper its name.
  • Use: You can find Indian recipes and more on our Blog.

Cultivation and ecology

This is how the pepper is grown:

  • Cultivation method: Cultivation in multi-stage agroforestry systems, without the use of pesticides. Although there are modern pepper varieties with higher yields, many farmers in the Fair Trade Alliance Kerala continue to cultivate old varieties such as Karimunda, Valamkottai, Neelamundi, Jeerakamundi and Panniyoor. At the annual Seedfest, the producers meet and proudly present the seeds they have brought to exchange.
  • Producers: The small farms of the members of the "Fair Trade Alliance Kerala" are on average just one hectare in size. The farmers grow a wide variety of products for export, for the local village markets, but also for themselves. Many have an additional income because family members work in the city or even abroad and support the farming families.

This is how the price is made up

The producers receive USD 11.20 per kilogram of Karimunda pepper. We pay USD 30 per kilogram of pepper.

1 review for «Karimunda» Pfeffer (200g)

  1. Wina -

I have never tasted such a wonderful pepper before! I always thought pepper was a boring spice that only tasted good with other spices. Karimunda has so much flavor on its own that it doesn't need anything else. It smells wonderfully fresh and is reminiscent of peppermint on the tongue, not overly hot and somehow cooling.
